but you could have them the wrong way on the dis-pack, there are numbers on the side of the dis-pack, number 1 is the timing belt end. worth a look

Right. It's the new inlet you've fitted. It's not sealed propperly. I had the same problem.

Take it off, clean both surfaces and buy a new gasket and gasket paste.

Put gasket paste then gasket more gasket paste then the inlet.

i had it fitted on my previous engine, it has been fitted to this engine with lock-ite and a brand new gasket, i think the problem is bigger than just the inlet, sounds that its not running correctly internally

Get someone to push down hard on the inlet while you start it up. See if there is any difference.

What order do the HT leads go into the dispack?

1
2
3
4

Like that?

they are the same as they were on my old engine which ran fine, so surely they would still be in correct place?

So all you have changed is "inlet manifold, change dispak, leads, spark plugs"

Otherwise the engine was fine?

Why did you swap over the dispak, leads and spark plugs?

we werent getting a spark, so we thought we would change them over to see if it solved the prob, but the prob was due to the loom given to us and also we cut a wire when taking the old engine out. so we swapped the looms back over and its sparking now

So you have spark but it's very lumpy. And your sure that the inlet is sealed all the way round.

It could be the timing but if it was running fine b4 and you haven't had that off, then it really can't be that.

it does sound pretty ropey when it does start. very loud and getting a puff of smoke up the inlet and out the throttle body when shut down? umm i was told the timing may be out slightly but not alot should be ther, there abouts.

One or 2 teeth out can give you big problems, Timing an engine isnt something you should really say "oh thats close enough"

This is the first time the engine has tried to be started since he had the head of though? or am i reading this wrong?

im not sure if hes played with the belts, as he said something about the timing and that it was roughly there, so he might have tweeked the belts slightly?
