The N95 has a standard GPS chipset like any other sat nav on the market. You do NOT have to pay any GPRS charges to use it.

The N95 does have a setting called Assisted GPS in which the N95 sends a small amount of data over the data network to get a faster first time to fix, but the sat nav its self does not use GPRS and A-GPS is an optional setting.

The only thing you have to pay for on the N95 is the software, but you can always install 3rd party free sat nav software instead anyway (which ive seen running on an N95).

N80 you can get additional software for. (and receiver is needed)

N95 is being replaced by N95 8gb, same phone with slightly updated nokia maps and a better screen and obviously it has 8gb of internal memory.

TBH if you can buy a satnav device as they are far better than using on your phone!

E90 is free unless you want the voice guided stuff....

They are great if u just want maps of places tho!

You can use GPRS and load the maps that way, but thats silly and expensive. Just download nokia map loader and nokia maps from

http://www.nokia.com/maps

You certainly shouldnt have to. If theres a network/shop saying that then they are nothing more than con artists.

There may be things that the data network is used for (like downloading new maps), but that can be done via a PC anyway and the A-GPS setting only uses a few KB of data to get a faster fix, but the GPS itself doesnt touch the data network at all.

Maybe people are confused by the fact that GPS and GPRS are shortened to similar things, but are infact two totally different things?

I dont even think you can navigate over the data network can you?

to be honest, you'll find thats what your operator is telling you. The GPS on the N95 is FREE...100% FREE. The only thing you HAVE to pay for, IF you want it, is the voices for the sat-nav (believe it's a yearly subscription). Other than that, it's FREE!
Like said, downloading the maps and using Assisted GPS, uses your GPRS connection - but the maps can be downloaded via wifi or your pc and the Assisted GPS can be turned off.

the n95 will navigate for free, but it wont "tell" you with voices. Just arrows and on screen directions.

Its £50 for 3years subscription

I installed it on my N73. The screen is too small for it to be of any use so I bought a TomTom.
