right, Ive taken the engine out of mavs old corsa, and stripped it of everythin. but do i need the actual gear linkage rods that go from the gearknob to the gearbox??

Nah, the in car selector uses corsa bits. You just need to undo the 13mm bolt from where the selector rod comes out of the bulkhead and keep the linkeage from there!
