I paid £399 and never regreted it so £299 I see as a bonus better deal than any Xbox as your getting built in HD with the blu ray player not paying extra £100 for the HD DVD drive.

Fairly weak games though. That's the sticking point for me.

Don't agree with them taking out the backwards compatibility, or the memory card slots, but then it's £100 cheaper!

but the backwards compatability was software based in the newer ps3 systems, what effect does removing it have on cost?

lol just find it funny they are cutting the price that much considering what they were saying about price when it was first released, sony eating there own words again.

It will be interesting to see how the sales go now. For people that are interested in having a HD movie player too it really makes a lot of sense now.

I have a 'normal' PS3 and don't really use the backwards compatability at all now. I've never used the memory card reader, and I only use 2 USB ports for charging. Maybe the "removal of backwards compatbility" refers to the US version rather than the Euro that has always been that way (and the budget will still do it in software).

I'm more than happy with my games at the mo, but I think once the 'Home' network is established (plus Little Big Planet, etc), and some of the upcoming titles are released, it will be pretty cool

Nothing they've done has changed the way games will play. I know they said "no price cuts", but I imagine it's probably just a response to the release of Halo 3 and the Elite.

Apparently the backward compatability cost quite a bit to put in so thats where the price change comes from

well the origional jap and american machines used hardware emulation, aparently they phased this out in the new european consoles and changed it to software emulation.

unless this is the change to the new software type system, although i thought this happened a long time ago.

But you forget, its business. Businesses do that sort of stuff all the time. You don't expect Sony to just let the PS3 fizzle out of place simply because they said at one time 'we're not going to reduce it'.

I haven't got any of the consoles, but have always liked Sony and will consider the PS3 with the reduced price. I haven't got any PS2 games anyway as I sold them all last year so backwards compatibility means nothing.
