in a standard exhaust system, what is the box in the middle? the one between the catalytic converter, and the back box??? mine needs to be replaced but i dont know which part it is. cheers

Centre silencer, you could either replace it or have a straight pipe put through (from cat to back box).
Gives the exhaust a bit more grunt and will still be road legal as long as you still have a cat and back box silencer AFAIK
