One goes to the chassis for everything to earth through the car back to the battery.
But a main earth cable goes to the starter motor.

Vaux Lad is correct, where the starter motor is bolted to the bellhousing, the earth cable is connected to one of the bolts by a ring terminal, there is also a connection to the bulkhead.
