some general questions, so i though i'd post in general chat.

If everything work out we will have bought a place with space out back to build a garage.

I dont know exact dimension etc but i'd say its wide enough for two cars.

I reall really want a 4 post lift. A) to work on cars B) to store 1 more car in the garage.

So...

What height is generally needed for one? If is was to fit one it would need to be at the side, not centre so hight is a BIG issue if the roof is to be sloped.

Power - whats this 1 phase, 3 phase pish?

You need lots of height - not just twice the car as you want a proper gap between them - plus when you're working its not just roof height you want it lifted.

Plus you need to make sure the one up there doesn't drip if you want it for storage. Personally I wouldn't trust that incase it fails.

Phase is the type of electricity. Don't think you'll be able to get a three phase supply in a house.

You need a double height ceiling for it. At a guess 4 to 5m.

You need three phase power for it. At home you will only have a sinlge phase power supply which will only be able to supply about 15amps of power. You need a lot more than that to run the motors on the ramp.

They're not all electric motors on the ramps though. My mate at the farm has a hydraulic one powered by electric motor. Not sure if that is single or three.

what about the floor?
won't that need reinforcing? bound to have some heavy duty securing method at the base which needs support!

you can get lifts for your own home use but there only scissor lifts so not much good if u want to store a car under it. if ur building the garage for the storage then how about gettin it converted for 3phase

Will still be three phase. All the ones I looked at were three phase, plus I don't have the height for it. It's annoying because you can get a second hand Bradbury (best) lift for about £500-£1500 from a garage which is being liquidated. They are always for sale in free ands and e-bay.

The ones with the hydraulic ram in the corner and the pullies and 'ropes' all round are single phase, or at least the one in my old work was.

You need about twice the height of a Range Rover/Low roof transit Adam.

Concrete... A 4 posted bolts into the floor at every corner and a 2 post bots in under the mechanical parts - they are really stable structures. Though they would work not bolted down, but you would never risk that!

2 post lift is better at home than a 4 poster IMO, as they don't need as much space.

yes.... i wouldnt want to leave a car on a 2 post scissor lift though

4-5m is a bit out of the question esp for the sides of the garage. Not sure planning would allow a bit high double garage

Why not? as long as the sills aren't crusty, it's just as good as a 4 poster.

plus say 1.5m max for any cars that i'd have up there...

2.2 + 1.5 = 3.7m or there abouts...

Anybody got any ideas on designs that could hold two cars (width ways), have a peaked roof, and get a 4post lift at the side

Doesn't work like that with a 4 poster Adam, the corner with the motor in has a ram which goes up whatever the height is again when it's fully up.

You can get single phase to three phase converters. 3 phase transformers. Will be expensive tho.
