WTF are they? they must serve some purpose.

Back to the original question, It MUST be the C16XE head then.

Yup it must be c16xe.
As x14/x16xel ports are different.
And X16xe has casts near the plug holes.

Looking at them, they dont seem to serve any purpose, there just there, lol.

Heres my x16 head, you can clearly see the round casts:-

I would have probably spotted that if I had a picture of the top of my head

What inlet have you got on there Vaux Lad?

Went to warren.g's today and have confirmed that its not the right head

Its an X14xe / X16XEL as the inlet ports are smaller

ive seen x14/x16/c16 with and without those round castings in the head.

I have a C16xe head thats been polished and ported to a high standard if you want it Gav..... £200. has been skimmed and pressure tested recently as well as new valves fitted and stem seals. think the followers are new as well, was going to keep it for my new engine but have changed my plans.

as we found out today gavin!

Robin's 1400 head has 5 dots.

had 4 cylinder heads in front of me today..

the 5 'dots' you can see in the picture works out what head you have, the heads with 5 dots extruded where my c16xe head and gavins x16xe head

and the ones with 3 dots extuded (like in the picture, but not visable due to angle of picture) were my x16xel cylinder head (aka a 1400 one) and the new head gavin had, which tuned out to be a 1400 one

ports sizes were measured - 1400 head 48mm across inlet ports, 1600 head 54mm across inlet ports

and exhasut ports all the same

So, my X14XE head should have 3 sticky out dots and 2 flush ones?

I can't measure the port sizes Warren, it's a ported head

I don't think there's an actual way to tell by looking, unless you measure the ports TBH.
