That smell is stereotypical of the cat going!

Which = because they can be expensive.

Cheaper to buy a de-cat pipe. Although it won't pass an mot if done properly. New cats can be very expensive although i've seen them on ebay new for less than £100. Don't know how good they are.

Because a de-cat pipe has no catalytic converter, which means the emmisions will be to pot and it will fail the MOT.

Cats for 12v's are over £300 iirc.

No exhaust systems, as far as I know, unless you specify, will replace your cat.

Cat back (from what I gather) is the centre box and rear box and all piping in between.

De-cat means the cat is taken off, which will fail an MOT but gives better performance.

Speak to where ever you was getting the exhaust done, they might be able to do you a deal on the exhaust system AND cat.

I had a new cat and flexi pipe (as it was shagged) put on my car not long ago came to around 200 quid IIRC. Passed MOT with flying colours

Quite cheap - I know 12v cat's are extortionately (sp?) priced.
