I have the chance to get a GSI engine for cheap, and will be re building it and fixing the Head Gasket.
I've never done anything like that myself before. So, i'll do it for the experience. The engine will be out of the car. Once done, it will be sold.
Is there anything that I can do with the bottom end while it's stripped? Piston rings will be done aswell.
Skimming the head - Is it a neccesity to do this?
Any other suggestions?

replace the big and small ends shells? check with a straight rule and some feeler gauges to see if the head is warped, if so will need a skim. probs best to skim head anyway if the headgasket is away.

Shells. hmm, I take it they are the parts that fit on the rods to stop the wear?

Yes bearings shells. Cost about £70 for the lot. But check crank for any scoring or ovalness. If so it'll need regrinding and oversized bearings. New piston rings nd hone the bores. Maybe new oil pump. Depends how much your willing to spend?

Might be worth considering cost.
What starts as a "cheap" engine doesn't end up like that.
Last time i enquired, rings were like £120 for a set.
Shells £60/£70
Full gasket set.
Head skim-£40
Block hone(may need a re-bore and oversize pistons depending on wear)
Plus any tools you'll need if you dont already have them(torque wrench, angle gauge, piston ring compressor, valve remover etc)
Soon add's up.
Probably cost £500 ish to rebuild a complete engine.

Just do it anyway, saves knackering another HG in 2 weeks and having to do the skim, gasket, belt and bolts all over again...
Rings are not £120 a set, Autovaux only want £178 for 4 pistons WITH rings, so the rings are definitely not £120 from them.
Gasket and bolt set is £60, belt and tensioners are about £40, then you'll want a water pump, maybe oil pump, thermostat, CTS.
I reckon you could do it for £350 if you're doing it yourself, plus whatever for tools.

if your doing it to sell it you are wasting your time?
And do I read it write that you never intend to fit it to a caR?
Just do it then sell it?

Had a quick look round, and yeah, there more like £60/£70.
Altho you can sometimes pick up cheap new old stock off ebay.
Still costs a LOT more than you can get a decent engine for tho.

Thanks for the info gents.
Cam1 = Exactly what I was thinking. Even if I break even. Surely a re-built engine with essentially 0 miles on will be worth quite a bit. If i recoever the cost of parts needed, i''m not too arsed about making a profit. All it;s then cost me is the time.
