just found out my mate has a steam cleaner,is it a good idea to steam clean my engine,what do i need to watch out for and wrap up for protection

Nothing. Just do it. I pulled my HT leads out so i could clean better around there.

just pressure wash it 
got this result with some tetroclean and pressure washer, 3 mins job.

just leave the engine on while doing it

Just aim it to the metal areas you want to do. It doesn't matter if you hit some wires. If you leave it on the wire then you'll have a problem.

I'd cover anything electrical.
I wouldn't want to be jet washing sensor plugs etc.
