Asbestos was used between 1945 and 1984, so anything built before or after that will not have asbestos...

you can get asbestos surveys carried out now but they cost about £500 and are usually only for commercial premises

You need to be especially careful with early artexing

however they used white asbestos, which although still harmful is not as bad as the "asbestos" which you'll read about in horror stories in the press

i thought they tended to use it on ships and things tho as it is more fire resistant. Is it in your house?

Asbestos is/was a constructional fire retardent material - was used in many applications especially buildings and houses

was quite funny as the replacement for asbestos was actually more carcenogenicand even harder to get rid of!

The newer/modern materials arn't as bad

The reason I ask is that I have been replacing a door frame at my house and quite alot of the plaster surrounding the door has cracked and is falling away. I'm not 100% sure of the date of construction by sometume around 1920.

Ok, good stuff. I haven't heard of it really being used within plaster anyway...more cement sheeting, lagging, sprayed decorative finishes etc.

wear a dust mask to ensure your saftey but I wouldnt be too worried!

I would wear a dust mask just in case

My house was built approx 1900, we had asbestos tiles in the hallway, asbestos garage and everywhere was replastered and the plasterer didnt mention anything about it being in the walls, didnt even occur to me!!

Considering its just a door frame, and looking at the cost to get it checked out i wouldnt worry about it, just take precautions!

even if it isnt asbestos it will be best to wear a mask just to stop the plaster dust irritating your throat and lungs
