just finished te head gasket today. It startd straight away. But tickover was 2000 rpm! Then after a minute or so it rose to bout 4000 but then i switched it off. There is also what appears to be a high pressure hissing sound from the batter side of the engine, Culd i have swapped anything round by mistake to cause this?
Oh its a 1.6 16v gsi lol

I second that suggestion for a split vacumm hose,
i refit my inlet manifold on my x14xe and it was not sealed properly and when i started the car up it revved upt to 3000 rpm and continued to rise because there was no vacuum so it responds as if you have depressed the accelerator because it is able to draw air into the inlet.
check around the brake servo pipe and the throttle position sensor or check the inlet manifold is all back on properly

foundthe problem. The throttle body didnt seem to be on the top part of the manifold properly. Stupid error lol.
Anyway it now starts, sort of! It takes a few turs to start when before it was instant. It also flat spots whe i put my foot on the throttle and splutters on tickover??? I didnt do it bfore lol
