Right the question relates to a Fiat Punto Grande but brakes are brakes so somebody should know.
Basically on the Gf Active Sport there is about 1 inch of travell on the brake pedal before the brakes bite at which point they really bite and throw you out the windscreen.
Also, and this may be unrealated there is a lot of play on the handbrake, This could be cause the car is new and may have strached or could it possibly be a sign of a more serious problem causing the brake pedal proble.
Its not just a little bit play were talking about here. You put the brakes on and think Shit nothings happening, so apply a little bit more, still nothing so panic and drop the anchors.
Any suggestions before I go back to fiat, don't know if I am just being over picky

Thats how new cars are these days. Do you have another FIAT garage where you live? Go for a test drive in the same model. Don't tell them about yours. Just test drive.

sounds like rear brakes need adjusting and there may possibly be air in the system and is being chased round when you first hit the pedal, defo go back to fiat though.
