the noise of the battery trying to turn it over? The starter motor?

Is the battery flat, or nearly flat?
Is the fuel pump working?
Are the plugs sparking?

not sure whether 1.2 8v is in/out tank pump. Either way find the pump... you should be able to hear it whirring/working with the ignition on. Simplest way of checking

you may have just flooded it.

If the plugs are soaked in petrol, and sparking..... it'll prob just be flooded

you got spare plugs? That would be quickest.

Try just drying off the plugs (use hot air)....

Lol, i always use a lighter, the amount of fuel on the end of the plug aint going blow you off your feet, lol. Just a quick flash, all done

Its flooded because you were trying start it and it wouldn't fire, so the fuel wasn't getting combusted.

Sounds like your engine was lacking a spark for some reason.
