yes... and i have bought most people a new computer, a new A3 laser printer, my self some cool toys and cd printing printer for my downloaded cds and a colour A1 inkjet.

tbh willay, getting an HP server is a bit overkill unless you have a 100+ client accessing it all the time, theres no reason to go spending 100s or 1000s on setting up a storage system for a small company.....
Personally, i would replace your 1000 snap servers and ebay it for a 2200/2000 and just replace the drives - can pick a 2200 for around 60-90 quid which is a bargin for a snap product.
Otherwise, go down the linux route on a basic box (doesn't exactly need to be server spec or raided for that matter) and use FreeNas/Ubuntu/(linux OS + samba) and a few drives.

a lot of money that is bart - can pick up decent dual xeon servers off ebay for around a grand, seems a bit excessive and expensive to have something like that for a small company.
If it is just purely storage (and you canne be arsed, which is far enough as im struggling with linux at the mo also lol) then you can pickup a netgear 1TB box for around 800 quid, can't see the company needing anymore than that

do you mean the sc101 drives?
If so, i already have a 500gb one at home, and they are very flakey to say the least.
I think they're good, useful, but flakey.
would you buy something off ebay for 1k for the company? too risky.
Plus, we would get the tech support etc
bare in mind we have no server what so ever, so we're backing up GB's over the network at night each day.

from a few people i know that run the TB netgear NAS boxes, there pretty happy with them - run 24/7 and no problems.
Still though, if its only backing up data, i dont know why you need a server? nor a 6 grand one at that?
If you had to run company email server or database system, fair enough, but 6 grand on a server than it just going to be used as storage seems a bit silly....maybe thats me though.
If you're worried about buying something off ebay, then build one yourself - it certainly doesn't have to be a decent box to be a storage server and could save the company thousands which you could spend on some more gagets 
Personally upgrading the network to Gb standards would be more beneficial than a decent server that will spend most of its time sitting in the corner ticking over....

its not just backing up data, its storage device too.
We have everything stored on the servers, quotes, accounts, drawings etc. we currently have no access on any folders shared accross the network, and even alot of peoples my docs are not protected due to the fact that it needs to be backed up

But you're after storage now as well as a place to backup to?
I mean, if you had a server you could run a central domain system (network knowledge runs out about now lol) that everyones my docs are stored as well as storage for backing up before being backed up to snap boxs or another NAS system.
But it wouldn't require a 6 grand system, and looking at those specs, i dont even see where 6 grand is - considering the 3 gig xeon cpu is only 150 quid. And i would think using dual cores or dual P4s would provide better peformance over the xeons and would be cheaper for such a small company.
But it seems that your ideas have changed a bit from a simple NAS setup to a full blown server based system......

Specs for storage systems depend on what the usage of the storage is. If it is a high I/O application, you need to decrease the size of your disks and increase the number of spindles that you are running. The only thing with this is that you need an all singing and dancing controller to do this. However if it only a handful of users accessing small amounts of data at long intervals then fewer drives and larger drives is the way to go forward.
Can you give us any ideas as towards what the storage is being used for, number of users etc?

100+ clients?
Believe you me, a HP DL360 of some sort is good enough for 20 users or whatever without being considered overkill. You need to realise that in businesses you cant just get away with some shitty PC desktop hack, you need to implement proved out solutions that will last the test of time and have proper support.

Ive just got another quote from Dell for all of the above from a friend who has an account manager, 5k.
which is slightly better.
I do have a question though. The managing director would oftenly like to work from home, but doesnt yet have the internet. Will this be awkward when he wants to work on his laptop, more importantly on files in his my docs etc?
