My Girlfriend has a 1.4 16v Automatic corsa (1993) which has just scrapped its 2nd gearbox. The engine and everythign else on the car is perfect, its only done 56,000 miles. The symptoms are always the same, it will no longer drop into drive (D) and change gear automatically and so we have to change gear manually. Had the car plugged into diagnostics software and everytime it shows the same fault (internal electrical faults inside the box) Has anyone else had these problems with the auto gearboxes? Are they prone to it? Or, is there somethign else on the car that could be killing the gearbox that may be worth changeing to prolong the life of it. Maybe the ecu? Any help very gratefully recieved.. Thankyou

you sure its the box whats devleping the fault ? is the selector in the car have any play in N and D and is it hard to shift out of park ?
the selector switch on to of the box can play up and do all sorts of wierd thing inc intermitant reverse lights (flickering when in reverse) and can cause the auto box ecu to go loopy. does the sports mode light come on (flashing) and it goes into limp home mode??
edit. i forgot to say the auto box has its own ECU and its located under the carpet in the drivers footwell (on the left by the heater ducts) on the early corsas i think it behind the glove box tho
have a look at these links......

im not sure about the flickering reverse lights, but the S light flashes up on the dash board as soon as the car is started. It is difficult getting it into reverse, dropping in about 3seconds after reverse is selected and going in with a big clunk.. Iv got a gearbox ready to be fitted on saturday, wondering if i neednt bother nbow if it could only be the switch??

Sounds like it could be the torque converter but its odd for something like that to happen on two gearboxes . Can you not even force it into drive?

it will go into drive quite happily, but it will only stay in 3rd gear... having to change gear manually from 1 2 and 3

its worth having a look a the selector switch as it's a common prob on cars around 8-15 years old
i cant see how you have killed 2 boxes tho unless its been abused slamed into reverse will still moving ect
if you stick into drive and it goes into 3rd straight away its going into limp home mode so the ecu is detecting a fault on the box or selector switch

so would that perhaps indicate that the ecu is working fine, eleminateing this as a possible cause or problem.. Will the selecter switch be changed with the gearbox if i go ahead on saturday and have the replacement fitted?

in the selector switch use silicon grease if you can get some if not a bit of cv grease will do. It dont need to be packed either
when you take it off mark the position of the switch as it can be adjusted and will throw the selector out and it wont select properly
be carefully when taken it apart. IT will fall apart there a 3 contacts on the arm and a small spring behind each of them. The contacts MUST go back the right way around and it the right order !!! (look at the wear marks on the contact it will give you a good clue)
if its never been apart the grease will be like toffee I use a bit of wd40 and a old toothbrush to clean out the old stuff
One last thing when taking apart undo the 6 screws first but bet carefull when bendind the cable clamp out the way as there is a small breather pipe among the wires
