Gona be doing alot of work soon, but I want to know how can I check the condition of the piston rings easily without removing the engine?

I'm already earmarking valve stem seals and guides, waterpump, timing belt, headgasket (need to anyway with doing stems and valves) clutch, cts, thermostat, clean the EGR & blank it, clean the ICV, etc....

just a case of doing a wet & dry compression test? or what? as im not sure if the headgasket is going also...
cheers

Compression test, or look for smoke coming out of your tail pipe.

it smokes when idling for a while and flooring it, or lifting off after taking it up to silly RPM's...

doesnt smoke any other time or under load, only on above conditions...

More than likely to be worn out valve stem seals. My 2.0 did that, changed them and it was job done

If you are putting on ARP rod bolts then you could just change the rings while you got everything in pieces, they are cheap enough and will give you a good piece of mind

true might do that, will see how well the condition of the bores are though when the heads off & sort the rings perhaps
