On my brother's computer, he has an Asus DRW-1604P CD/DVD combo writer drive.

He can burn and read CDs and DVDs fine, and listen to audio CDs fine, however if he tries to watch a DVD the picture is fine but there is no sound? Doesn't matter whether they are normal DVDs or copies.

Is the drive broken do you think? DVD sound worked once upon a time but hasn't worked for a few weeks now, and he says he hasn't installed anything new on the computer that might have affected it...

Also it doesn't matter whether he uses Media Player, Real Player or anything else to watch the DVD, there's still no sound, so I'm thinking maybe it's device driver or hardware related?

Its not the drive because if its reading the video it has to be able to read the audio too.
I'd say a driver or codec issue.

There is no jack on the drive so it's through the sound card.

If I delete the driver in Device Manager and reboot, will it give me the option to check the Internet for latest drivers etc.? It's been a while since I done any PC troubleshooting in Windows, I forgot what Windows says when it finds a new device etc. (Win XP anyway)!

It's built into the motherboard.

Where do I get this codec pack you speak of?

Its instead of using codec packs, it does the same thing though.
It'll play anything except quicktime and real media.

ffdshow plays everything except the 2 mentioned above though and won't cause any conflicts.
Its also very handy if you want to change any setting or do post processing or change aspect ratios.
