How good are these cars?

Looking at changing the corsa and this is turning into a consideration.
The 1.8 T obviously.

What sort of trouble free millage should I expect? i.e. at what point do things start going wrong/need replacing?

Are they worth the cash? Or are they fairly wank?

a jabba remap will see them to over 200bhp if you get the 150bhp model

Can you fit a DV or a BOV to them? or do they not benifet?

Lots of electrical faults, dealers are near on useless, boring to look at as standard, boring to drive.

Tim, What sort of MPG do you get?

On average how many miles to £10?

Really varies with weather. Over winter I suppose I've got about 28mpg on average for a tank...

On a motorway it'll sit around 32-36mpg; foot on floor a lot it goes to low 20's...

Im 19 (will be 20 when buying car) so a R32 is probably out of the question

Think they are about the same. I prefer the interior of the Audi to the Golf. Seen some Sport models that have really nice Recaro type leather seats. Not sure if thats a standard thing or an option

From what I know in the GTi you get recaros etc as standard.

im very tempted by the GTi as it looks nice as standard, would just need to change the wheels

I prefer Audi S3's as Mk IV Golf's are far too common, but I agree they are nice car's have noticed may corsa drivers upgrading to Golf's

Doug, 4Motion is a lovely car, V5 auto is too.

For all round use and if you're not too minted, I can't recommend the 150PD highly enough.

They are quicker than 1.8T, 2nd and 3rd gear acceleration is shocking, yet they are brilliant on fuel, being a diesel.

I hate diesels and always have but I would have a 150PD Golf.

If you test drive one I promise you will be a convert.
They are more dramatic and rewarding to drive than a 1.8T and they don't chuck out black smoke.
They are remarkably civilised noisewise inside too.

On the whole, the MK IV is a well put together car, they do have some issues, the most common being -

Washer pipes popping off in the boot area and soaking the boot floor etc and coroding the micro switch on the boot latch.

Window regulators failing (early type with plastic rather than alloy glass clamps).

Coolant Temp sender failure.

Brake light switch failure.

Water pumps can go.

Bonnet latch micro switch can go.

Courtessy light switches can pack up - they come complete as part of the door lock, so are very dear.

Door locks can go wrong.

Central Convenience control unit can go silly.

Dash panel insert can fail.

Headlight switch can pack up.

Rear axle bushes wear on high mileage cars.

Welded hanger bracket on middle box tends to come away from welds and then make annoying rubbing noise on box.

Headlight washers can pack up.

Door mirrors are big and tend to get bashed a lot and are dear to replace.

Headlight bulbs are very awkward to change and unless you are patient and have a decent tool kit, you will have to pay half an hours labour for a vw dealer to change a bulb - near side is usually worse than offside and requires removal of battery.

Flip keys can go wrong and are dear. They will also need to be recoded which is also dear.

Try not to be scared off by this list as these are worse case scenarios and a lot of these problems will have already been dealt with under warranty.

Incidentally, R32s are very overated, they are a bit of a sheep in wolf's clothing. They are noisy and bumpy and have a stupid steering wheel and feel no quicker than a good 4Motion which is a cheaper and far more subtle and tastefull car.

they dont like them unless its a recirc


utter crap, they work fine providing you dont fit it in the standard position, move it over to the ic pipe.

forgot the coil packs, which mostly have been fixed now, but many still fail. also secondary airpumps and pipe work break..

but yeh diesel vw's after 2000 are all good!

I got a golf 1.8T, Had a Jabba sport custom remap and is now putting out just over 230bhp. Had no problems with it and often see 39mpg on the motorway sitting at about 80.
