think the main change is to stop the shit SBD valve spring set up (andy will im sure correct me on this) for a single swindon racing set up

Hi Guys OK - to answer the questions, yes I was running 214bhp using mainly SBD kit (TBs, 295/295 cams, forged pocketed pistons, steel con rods, double valve springs and titanium valve caps.

However, as some of you may remember, the springs shattered in cylinder no. 4, dropping a vlave, which then destroyed the piston and head A total engine rebuild was required but being such a big job and with other commitments, I took it off the road to rebuild at my leisure with the help of a good mate who's also a top mechanic.

The first thing I did was to quiz SBD about the shattered valve springs and they basically said 'tough - we rebuild our engines every 1000miles, which is what you should have done!' Needless to say, crossed SBD off my Xmas card list.

Did some digging around and got some great help from Swindon Racing, who used to build the Vauxhall Group A 1600 engines for rallying. They were using their own cam profile with Schmitthelm (German) single springs revving to 8500rpm. The springs are far better quality than SBD stuff, and apparently they built 22 engines, many of which ran over 20,000 miles without any valve train problems. Anyway, the engine has been built with new Omega pistons (ceramic coated), Swindon cams and Schmitthelm springs, as well as all the existing gubbins. The cams are slightly less aggressive, so mid torque will be fractionally down. However, on a similar spec engine (X16XE), Swindon was making 205bhp without TBS! I've had the head of the donor engine thoroughly reworked, so I'm hoping to still achieve around 215bhp, but this time with a hell of lot more reliability.

Engine is ready to be bolted back together now, so with some mapping, should be up and running next month. Hope this time, some of you will get to see it

I'm doing a group buy on steel rods at the end of th eonth sometime, will be £350 for a set of the roads, made by eagle and have ARP 2000.

The same company that's making the rods fo beardy's group buy on the 2L engine.

I need 10 names ideally.
I'll do a seperate thread when I have a bit more info on them.

Paul, are you running an electric water pump yet??

Very high compression, amazing cyclinder headwork, trick cams, carefully worked air intake, gas-flowed throttle body

Their works super1600 engine makes 215, so only 10 down on that, shows on a bank cheque engine TB's aren't always the way

I have no electric waterpump, but will be getting one sorted when the rebuild begins...

Also will be stripping out the PAS, and other useless parts which sap power!
