i used the normally 1.6 ribbed belt but got a little bracket made up to hold the altenator....

if you get a 1.4 16v non pas engine mount this does the same job so i believe....

use the tensioner that came with your engine.... and no you wouldnt need a crane... just use your trolley jack under the engine to prop it up

its not the engine mount causing a problem, theres no tensioner acting on the ribbed belt, hence why he wants to switch to the earlier thin toothed belt and crowbar the alternator method of fan belt adjustment...

i will have the tensioner and belt assembly off mine up for grabs in the next week or so... cover my postage cost and its there

in which case, only the alternator top mounting is required surely, allowing the alternator to slide

the actually braket that holds the the altenator onto the engine is different on a 1.2 8v thats why is didnt line up...... you need the braket from the 1.4 8v a and a 1.4 8v altenator if your going to go ahead with changing the belt type

I was under the impression you just change the roller on the alternator to a 1.4 8v roller .... never thought i had to change the alternator etc aswell...?
