erm... where a mask first cos of the nasties then get some wire wool and brake cleaning fluid... (can be found in most shops) and scrub away - failing that use them but it will only clean the edges

how can you tell when a brake disc is fucked/not useable btw?

If there is a fecking great groove on the top and bottom of the disk where it has worn out. Or, if it is warped...

wear a mask and just wire brush the discs.
get most of the crap off, and then use them after.

Run ur finger over the disc ( from center to the outer ) and feel for any irregular thread marks.. just like 1800Ed said

if its smooth then they should be fine
