Also could be an air-lock in the system...

Its all well and good just topping it up, but like said, check it over for leaks.

If you can, drain & re-fill the system with fresh stuff, you might find the water when it comes out (if there is any) will be a mucky-brown color!

I'm in Liverpool too for the weekend starting friday night... Might be fitting my suspension in a side-road somewhere

bottom of the radiator is the fan switch, just remove the top on the header tank & then remove the temp-switch from the bottom of the rad & let it drain...

When its drained, just rinse it all out with a hosepipe by filling the headertank bottle & let it all drain through, some bits wont drain properly due to the thermostat as your supposed to change it / remove it to do this, but if your not up to the job, leave it be for the time being (but book it in a garage to get it done sometime!)

Put the fan-switch back in the bottom of the radiator, use a bit of threadlock & silicon gasket sealer, it helps no end to stop it leaking & make sure its tight!

Take out the CTS (coolant temp sensor) from your engine...
...if its an 8v - on the Inlet manifold, near Cylinder 1 (left-hand side), there is a lil single-wire spade-connector connected to it... remove the spade connector & then remove the CTS from the manifold.

16v... at the front-left of the engine near the thermostat housing is a lik blue connector in the head with a wire attached, this is the CTS, disconnect it & remove...

Refill the coolant system untill water stops bubbling out of the hole where the CTS was & comes out clear, then re-attach the CTS & top up till filled more...

With the cap off the headertank, start the engine & let it run till the coolant starts boiling over & switch off the engine & let it cool down

top up the coolant if needed, then refit the cap on the headertank...
