how about the mating face of the block?

lots of gasket still stuck on. dont want to damage it.

will a plastic scraper be ok?

There is a platic bristle type brush called roloc I think but its made by 3M just stick it in a drill and it works great

Sotchbrite scouring pads (borrow from kitchen sink) and some WD40, then when happy with it carb cleaner/brake cleaner and wipe off with a rag.

Did me good when my block & pistons were all shitted up! But also mixed a bit of WD40 with it too & seemed to help no end!
