help please!

car is standard 98 corsa b 1.0 12v

runs ok below about 3500 but above that it pinks and jerks slightly and also theres no throttle response above about halfway , it actually slows down if you open the throttle any more than halfway

i dont think i can do a paperclip test , see here...

http://www.corsasport.co.uk/board/viewthread.php?tid=165662

i tried to take a pic of the diagnostic socket on my car but it came out poor but im missing a pin by the looks of it , if you read the above post you will see what i mean.

i recently changed the coolant temp sensor and the idle speed motor because it used to idle really high for ages when cold. this is now cured though.

fuel + air filters + plugs are about 6 months old at most as well.

im thinking along the lines of the e.g.r valve is stuck open slightly maybe or the air mass sensor ?

the diagnostic light isnt on though (yet)

any advice would be helpful.

fast response

its got the coil pack unit. no leads or dizzy as such. not sure , thought that a problem with the coil pack unit would cause a problem all the time maybe , like a constant misfire?

ok below 3500rpm.

Serious loss of power under load would suggest ignition problem, or maybe injectors? how many miles has it done?

on 47k at the moment. been properly looked after as well, ie oil change halfway between services etc.

bet a new coil pack isnt cheap though from vaux.

strange one really, if you back off the throttle it picks back up again but i think its slowly getting worse over the past two weeks or so...

I dunno bout these vaux engines at all really, but generally if a car is truely pinking its the fault of the knock sensor, if a knock sensor is working properly then an engine cant pink.

(although i dont even know if these engines have knock sensors)

yes it does have a knock sensor. but i thought that a fault with that would of brought on the diag light , well normally anyway.

if its cheap il replace it anyway i think.

If it was pinking because of a problem with the knock sensor, it would be doing it through the entire rev range surely? Also, a few early 1.0 12v's were made with RON plugs.

I had this on my 1.0 12v when it hit 40k.

Solution: ripped it out and binned it and put a £250 1.2 16v with 7000 miles on it in there

was mass air sensor believe it or not, picked one up from scrappy and worked fine. I had ecu light on though so i knew wot it was...

yeah, diag light functions as normal , comes on with ignition, goes out when started.

going to try a coil pack by wednesday or poss thursday evening to see if that offers any improvement at all.

then will have to see about the knock sensor or air mass sensor if that doesnt work.

P.S , it does seem to be getting slowly worse though...

the easiest way to find out if its the afm is to just disconnect it and see if performance returns.
