I've just installed a CD-player unit in my mates girlfriends corsa 'c', and we just plugged the ISO-connector straight from the head unit to the cars connector, is the ok to do - the unit works fine btw.
I thought I had read it somewhere where it says you have to swap the yellow wire for the red wire.
Is this really necessary?

Yup, otherwise it wont hold any settings, radio presets, etc

depends if it is holding its memory or not, my pioneer was left as it was but had to swap the red & yellow when i fitted the alpine!
