just get a second hand acoustic start out on that, train ur finger tips. 60£
when u get better invest in a nice electric 300+£ 
learn normal 6string,
bass guitars have only 4 strings, the 4 lowest of the normal 6 string.

one of my m8s plays an electric guitar, he's in his garage all the time playing it, learnt it all himself and he's got pretty good now! 
i was considering it a few years back too

nah... i got accoustic first and playing electric is miles different as necks are thinner... best bet go to argos and get a cheap SHIT starter pack to see if ya like the idea... yes u can teach yaself as i have (with a lil help from me mate) adn yeh go with a lead/rhythm guitar as far more u can do with them (standard 6 string)

a Bass guitar only has 4 strings mate...
I say get a Electric guitar, I've got a fender strat - you can make an electric sound a lot better and lets face it we all want it to air guitar (or not as the case may be) with.
Thing with learning guitar is any lessons will teach you shite like, nursery rhymes, basic songs and hotel califonia (but a version that sounds nothing like it)
As cepta said, you need to get used to the guitar first, not only are your fingers soft (when you press the wires your left with marks - your skin gets harder the more you play) - but just the general movement and positioning of the fingers is important.
I'd say do a basic lesson, then get stuff from the net and books that you actually want to learn - so your learning to play in the style you want to know, rather than some crappy childish song sorta way.

been playing electric and acoustic for 3 years now, i bloody love it chills me out and at the moment i need it, had piano lessons when i was 11 for 3 years pretty good at that too, i can listen to a song and play it within 10minutes on guitar or piano.
My tip is learn on acoustic, cos when ya start electric it will be piece of piss to do, electric is so easy to play, master the acoustic first, every thing from then on is easy

heh, most of my mates are in bands (though some better than others - one lot recorded in America only a couple of weeks ago and were flown to america and back just for that by their record company)
When we all go round someone's house usually they all start picking up the guitars and its amazing what these guys can do - just playing things from how they think they should sound (i.e. just randomly strumming in the right places when you tell them to play a song - rather than learning it) - even with bass. Although I know what you mean.

Got myself an electric just before christmas, and teaching myself to play it a bit each week! It's not as hard as you'd think to pick it up, and tabs are a piece of pish to read once you figure them out!!!

I got a electric guitar, amp and tuner from Argos or Index or somewhere, 130 quid I think. If you're starting off you'll need the amp and tuner, don't be tempted to spend the cash on just the instrument!
Tabs are all over the web, if you've some musical background for timing etc. then you'll pick it up.
