yes

an easy way to test them is:-

take your car to a quiet empty car park

at a constant 30mph stamp on the brakes, if you get a loud constant thud thud thud noise that is the ABS working

if the car just locks up & slides, then they aint workin

ABS was standard on the early GSI's, the only options were electric mirrors, windows and air bag me thinks.
Must have been an option on your motor, one less thing to go wrong though, the ABS system does tend to play up from time to time

you can check if ya got it, look under the bonnet there will be a cylinder on the right hand side behind the headlight with a load of green brake line running into it and a black slide off cap on the end, thats the ABS pump

Who needs ABS anyway, increases your brake distances, (proved you can control hard braking without locking)
And it's extra weight ot carry, somethign to go wrong.
If you look under the bonnet you should see a big metal block with lots of brake piping (copper) coming in and out, which is the abs unit.
