Anyone got any ideas on how to do this?

I have all the necessary cables etc etc but they wont connect, even after using the ever-so-helpful Windows wizard.

Cheers

depends how you have it wired. for peer to peer the cable has to be a crossover, not your normal "ethernet" cable. looks the same, has the same ends on, but the wires are in different places

"ethernet", like the kind you'd plug your computer into a router with looks like this

crossover, which you'll need for peer to peer is wired like this

With the right software, yes.

Ethernet and a crossover is preferable though.

Ethernet and a switch is best option as then you can add more stuff.

can software for this be 'acquired' from the normal 'sources' or is it freeware?

Networking software for USB-USB cables I would imagine is proprietary to the cable, therefore perhaps but it's no use unless you buy the wire anyway.
