As I speak I'm sanding bumpers and arches to colourcode and was wondering- to what extent do I need to sand the black parts?

Do I need to get it really smooth or is it ok with just a bit of key?
Also any tips?

until they go a grey colour and all pimples type stuff has gone then reeeealy smooth imo
