try some thin oil, so lubricates the top end quicker from cold.

Could it be that the tappets/lifters have emptied?

The car is a newer car and probably has hydraulic tappets? Just get a doctors stethescope and put this on rocker cover when running. This should indicate which ones are worn and need replaceing. They cannot be fixed. But arn't that expensive. If you do not have a stethescope, start it fron cold and put your head near. Thats what i would do. May be wrong? My minis tappets were always going but can be adjusted with correct tools i.e feeler guages and basic tools.

Nathy, you can also use a screwdriver. Metal end on the rocker cover, and the plastic end on your ear.
