if i was to fibreglass/smooth my bumper before it went to the spray shop, would i have to make sure it's all totally smooth or can i leave it to the bodyshop?
just cant be arsed paying like 170 quid for a bodyshop to fill and spray my bumper when i could pay just like 80 quid for it sprayed

tbh i would leave it all for the bodyshop unless you are that confident you do a good job of the prep.
If you do a shit job and they finish it in the shop then you will be alot worse off. Spend the money and have it done properly because even if they dont do a superb job you can question them on it and then at least they cant blame your shit prep work (not saying that its shit)

just leave it to the bodyshop for the full job, ull piss them off for the sake of somthing which will take them about 15 mins , not worth it imo
