Today's daft question...
Got to replace Jay's alternator, what do I ask for at the parts shop and what would you expect to pay?
Corsa B 1.4 SRi 1994 (I think!)
And then, are they easy for a rookie to fit or should he pay a garage?
Thanks

Ask for an alternator. They will probably ask if its a ribbed belt or V belt, if it has PAS or aircon. Fitting depends how confident you are. It would be a good idea to replace the belt too while you are at it.

Cheers, where's here? Apparently the bolt that adjusts the belt is sheared too so got to get a new one of them too. Think the new belt suggestion is a good one too, he can pick a new one of them up from work.

I wouldn't have a clue. Had my 1st experience with a 13mm spanner today (trying to tighten belt) and no, it wasn't me that sheared the bolt. Toss pot who had the car before us did that.
Anyway, going to change bolt, then change belt and see if it stops the squeal and the occasional alternator warning light on the dash. If it works, brill, no alternator needed, if not, then I will have to find one.
What do you suggest, new, ebay or vauxhall scrap yard?

Hang on to it for us please. Trying to get the blooming bolt undone at the moment. With luck, the new bolt will allow us to tighten the belt enough to stop the screech. If this doesn't work then we will have to replace the alternator too.
Any ideas about how to get a worn bolt out? Just can't seem to get a grip on it at the moment.
