At least a 50lt compressor for panels (i wouldent go any lower)
Spray gun with 1.4 and 1.8 tip (i am a grav feed man)
Water Traps
then all your bits and bobs.
Primers, paints, scotch pads. panel wipe etc etc
Prob work out the same as having somone to do it for you....
hope this helps

I spent £130 on sand paper the other day...
I would think a 50 litre compressor would be too small. We tried to use one a while back and it was too small and struggled to do even a door. The 100 litre compressor was pretty good, did a whole car with it, but that was a struggle. The new 200 litre is perfect for what we do The same 100 litre comressor my riend has is going for about £170 on ebay. My 200 litre was £380 delivered.
The guns are going to set you back a fortune if you want a decent finish... Thoug hif you are planning to do a fair bit of painting it's a bit of an investment, as is the compressor.
Then you need all the other little bits, like abrasives and things. If you are looking to do a few odd jobs now and again you are best off buying in bulk. I used to buy sanding stuff from B&Q - £4 for 5 d/a disks. I spent about £17 a pack for over 100 disks a few weeks back, the whole lot came to £130 including a 3M hook it block - highly recomended! Get a long and a short one as they are fantastic bits of kit.
A decent d/a sander is a usefull tool too, you can get away with a B&Q one for small jobs. But they do die quickly if you are working them hard
Can't think of much more and Beardy has given a good list of things for you
