Hi there- I have over the last 2 months finished modifying my intake on my 2000 model Holden Barina (kiwi-spec). It has a c14se and oh my god was it crying out to be played with. During my time as a member of this site I have researched at length different options for improving engine performance *cheaply* without too much fuss.
Drawing from a wide range of advice, some good and bad, I settled with a PiperX panel filter, cold air intake and removing those damn restrictive pipes out of the airbox.
I have found small increases in power and torque (not much), but in todays era of heart-breaking fuel prices, decent increases in acceleration and fuel economy.
Sure, if you drive the car like a madman, it will move much better than a standard c14se motor, but if you drive it normally, or even like a bitch if you're hard up, you'll find your petrol going further.
Considering the small outlay compared to other options, I must say I am pretty satisfied with the outcomes. I recommend putting in the effort and extra research, because its better than suffering a car that is running below its true potential.
Thanks for all those who helped me, its now time to play with some suspension.
p.s. The piperX filter gives a mint induction roar as well
