I dropped the engine and box and stripped off the box and clutch as I was getting nowhere findig the prob. Turns out the friction plate has split, buit whats worse is the flywheel is full of little cracks! I think it must have been slipping at some point in the donor and got really hot.
Now looking for a flat flywheel and a new clutch!

indeed it was. Imaginary mars bar for you mate.
I was surprised by how utterly normal the clutch felt, logic said it was a dragging clutch, but short of it sticking on the shaft i couldnt see how. Id never considered the friction plate becoming a completely different shape!
