See if they'll accept a file from you.
Act like you don't know its been stolen and do something simple like heres a pic from the weekend.
run netstat from a command line while the file is transferring and you'll have the ip.

Just act like your talking to the guy on msn.
Start a convo and see if he'll accept something from you.
The go to start, run, type cmd and then type netstat in that while the file is transferring.
His IP should be shown.
This may or may not be absolutely useless though.

open msn messenger using another account, then if you see u r online from the laptop, send him (you) a file..go to your username on the stolen laptop, send file and just send a file to the latter, send a file ( large enough), if he accepts, run netstat from a command line while the file is transferring and you'll have the ip.

Its all been reported, It's my housemates laptop that was stolen and his account thats logged in!

I've sent a file, just waiting for them to accept it.

His status is set as 'away' so I assume they're charging it up!

Shouldn't just have tried to send a file.
Should have started talking like it was your mate.
Then bring it into the conversation.

As Abdus said, netstat -a is probably the only way unless there's a programme that does it
