You need to get XP service pack 1, then in control panel go to add/remove programs, go to set program access and defaults, click custom then the two dinky arrows on the bar, go down to choose a default instant messaging program, click use current program and uncheck the box for enable access to this program.

voila

or, go to start, run then type msconfig, click the startup tab and uncheck the box for msmsgs.exe or msnmsgr.exe

you can't uninstall the old msnmessenger, even if you install service pack 1 & select to remove it by doing add/remove, windows setup, its still there & will run 'invisible'.

only real way to get shut is to boot into safe mode, log in as administrator, open the task manager & make sure MSMSGS.EXE is not running, and then delete everything C:\Program Files\Messenger\

microsoft are just ghey in the fact you cant remove it at all - yet more bloatware & shite by them
