Would you be able to use standard controls fitted by the car manufacturer with an after market headunit?
Specifically a Citroen C8 and a Clarion headunit - ARX657ORZ and 6 CD multi-changer - CDC655Z.
Any ideas or previous experience along the same lines would be of great help.

That is quite an old clarion unit i think mate, they dont support the hard wired remotes.

halfrauds do have teh convertors for some headunit/car combos, give them a try, but dont hold your breath.
