I am going to look at a car with a 1.4 16v engine, it has done 118k and im abit worried about how many more miles it can take.
1) What is your opinion on how many miles they should do?
2) What are the tell tale signs that they are on their way out?
3) What should I look at/check on the engine when I go to see it if all sounds good?
Thanks
Cathy

114k is ok as long as it has been looked after well, ie, had regular services at correct intervals, hasn't been driven hard, money spent when needed etc etc, if you look after an engine, like frequent oil and filter changes, there is no reason why it can't last 200,000miles plus.
Check for any smoke when starting up, idling or with a bit of a push on the gas pedal, make sure there is no mucky white gunk under the filler cap and also that the coolant resevoir fluid at the back of the engine doesnt look too dirty or smells bad. It should smell quite sweet (anti-corrosive/anti-freeze mixture smell).
Make sure it starts first time, and idles at just below 1000rpm after about 5 minutes. If it is idling a little high when you first fire it up, don't worry, this is normal. Just let it warm up before checking the idle speed.
