headgaskets gone or is about to...
had the running water sound behind dash a while ago then stopped. Just checked oil and theres a large amount of moya looking stuff on the filler cap and dip stick.
Engine isnt overheating at all, infact it takes ages to heat up, takes about 30 mins for the engine to warm up. Also i havnt noticed alot of white smoke from the exhaust.
IS it true that as long as it doesnt overheat it will be ok for a while? Ive got a 60 mile trip or so today would that be a problem?
And does anybody know a rough price a garage will charge to fit it. Its a 1.4 8v spi engine btw
If i get it changed before it goes will I not need the head skimmed or should i still get it done?

sounds like head gasget like from cold fill coolent bottle full of water n start the car if it bubbles n gulps in water its a deffo but from the sound of the oil its the head right your lookin @ about 4 hours garage time (small indipendent place) thats what weed charge @work 80 pund labour but on the 8v engines its realy easy if your good with the spanners get the haynes out n do it yourself

Dont be easily fooled it might not be the gasket if you take of the oil cap after a very cold night you might get some moya looking stuff because of condensation in the engine.
Running water behind the dash will be the heater matrix.

sounds like head gasket, isit water in with the oil or oil in with the water? to be honest mate i just done a 8v multi point which want too hard and used to have a spi and it would be much easier cos the inlets alot less bulky.make sure you get the head skimmed too.i wouldnt be using it really, you'll not know when its too hot as the gauge wont work or the fan switch because no water and you dont really wana seize it. i rung around garages and they were looking at between 3-500 quid
