I think it's a publicity stunt for a new season of Lost.

If it was shot down, there'd be a lot of debris, if it hit the water at speed, there'd be a lot of debris, if it hit the water in a controlled manner, the plane would have been evacuated into life rafts. Where are the black boxes?

The china debris sighting has been ruled out now according to the press. Unless they are not letting on what they know. If it was aliens it would be covered up anyway.

That's assuming it was intact and everyone could get out. And it's be mentioned that there's supposedly strong currents in both seas, which would spread the debris field.

Rolls Royce and Boeing seemed to have debunked that rumour, according to the latest press conference, saying that the engines last transmitted data 30-odd minutes prior to the last known radar contact.
And if it was the case that it carried on transmitting, then i'd be very surprised if the transmitted data doesn't include current location or analysts weren't able to determine location from sensor data.

Can't phone companies track where last known phone signals can be traced to? Don't police do that kind of thing when crimes are commited? Failing that you could always ask one of our dodgy newspapers have a look...

That's assuming there's phone signal 85 miles offshore.

I would imagine that the number of hangars big enough to accept a 777 at a private airfield would be somewhat limited
