Well, I agree with most of what you're saying but don't really see that we indeed are fully "better off" than before. To me it's more of a sidestep than a step forward.

I think you misread that part. It's not that there aren't enough apps out of the box, but that you have to fap about with finding better suited apps on the Play store to replace the bundled ones.

This is very much a matter of preference, though, as I know a lot of people love replacing music players and browsers on their device. To each his own, but one of my pro iOS arguments has always been that it wasn't necessary to be able to do so as the bundled apps were pretty much perfect. With the maps app, that's just not completely true anymore.

There is nothing wrong with the Andriod mail client, browser, Gmail App, Maps App etc... it's the people who think they have to be different that like replacing them!

Gotcha - Some people will always want to customize the built in apps no matter how good they are.

The built in mail client/browser/calendar etc is different on each Android device so not sure how you can say that.

Obviously you can't make Gmaps default on iOS but you can get Siri to use GMaps for directions rather than Apple Maps.

Bit of an exaggeration there Ash

Android/native apps != Touchwiz/Sense/etc apps.

You know what I mean, you can't just generalise and say 'the Android mail app is good' when it's different depending on which android device you're referring to.

Surely that's generalising on the term 'Android'?

And it isn't device specific, rather it's manufacturer/network specific.

http://news.cnet.com/8301-33620_3-57393854-278/youve-got-bad-mail-android-needs-a-better-e-mail-app/

"Each device maker seems to use its own app. Even the same Android manufacturer, such as Samsung, will have e-mail apps that act differently from phone to phone."

Give it up nit picking.

I feel that many of these arguments can be summarised by this pic:

Okay point taken on the mail app (I find the HTC one lovely), the rest are the same!
