Encouraging though, yet again did most laps today.
This is what's encouraging me more than anything. They've really chewed up the mileage this winter, and not many teams did Q3 sims (assuming that's what LH/NR did for their 1:20's) which suggests that either:
Merc sponsors needed appeasing
or
Merc were happy with their race sim testing, and had time to play with qualifying sims
If the latter, they're looking really good. Only Ferrari (I think) did a quali sim in addition to Merc and they couldn't match them, so we're looking at least competitive with the Ferrari's.
Also, they gained 0.4(?) seconds between Lewis' run and Nico's run so either Nico is a VERY fast driver or that their upgrade scheme worked. If the latter, it means that their wind tunnel/simulation work is correlating correctly and bolting on upgrades throughout the season should be a positive experience.
Massive amounts of speculation/hope there - but nothing so far has led me to think they've got a dog under them, which is better than I could have hoped at this stage

Its hard to tell how much/if they were running ballast too.
Merc did this last season too though with Schumacher finishing quickest in the Barca tests. I would hope Merc have found something but we will find out in a couple of weeks weather there is any real truth in their lap times

It seems like the Honda/McLaren rumour which has been floating around since.... well, since Honda dropped their works team is picking up momentum now.
Would be good to see the Honda/McLaren relationship rebooted, and will probably mean the next VTEC engine is a 1.6 Turbo - which will upset a few hardcore NA fans

Saw a tweet from Merc today that they covered 17 race distances between Lewis/Rosberg over testing, pretty much a full seasons racing

That's a pretty cool statistic.
I wonder how many engines/gearboxes they've gone through during testing. As far as I'm aware there are no limitations in testing, and no curfew for the engineers on a night to do swaps.

Slightly smaller story, but this will also be the last year of Vodafone's title sponsorship with McLaren. I'll miss the rocket red

Every year I join about a dozen leagues. I cba this year, just doing the predictions with work as it's got prize money
I think it's a bit early to fear RBR running away with it, their tyre deg wasn't looking too great on longer runs compared to lotus, mercedes and ferrari.
We'll see tomorrow though, if they're more than .5sec infront in Q3 I'll be worried.

Aye Hamilton lost front downforce with a broken bib and just understeered off the track, Rosberg retired about a minute later with a knackered gearbox.
They did ALOT of troublefree mileage in testing so hopefully just a couple of one-offs

Glad its happened in practice. Lewis still seems happy, thats the main thing
Red Bulls do look pretty ominous. Its a shame it looks like rain might play havoc with quali as it would be nice to see where everyone stands.
