Write Off Categories
The insurance write off categories are as follows:
Category A Insurance Write Off - the vehicle must scrapped and no parts or components can be sold other than for scrap. Amounts vary but the scrap value rarely covers the cost of recovery and delivery to a scrap yard.
Category B Insurance Write Off - the vehicle must not be used again but non- structural and roadworthy parts and components may be recovered for use in other vehicles. Care must be taken to ensure that they are not critical components with important safety functions.
Category C Insurance Write Off - the vehicle is repairable but the parts and labour would exceed the value of the car. This is a tricky situation as there are plenty of amateur and professional mechanics who could use second hand parts to repair these vehicles at much lower prices than the list costs for parts and labour.
Category D Insurance Write Off - the vehicle is economically repairable but other factors are involved that cause the insurer to declare the vehicle a write off. Perhaps the replacement car hire is too costly or it will take too long for a specialist part to be delivered.
Category X Insurance Write Off - the vehicle is easily repairable and may even be still roadworthy.
Unrecorded Insurance Write Off - the vehicle damage was not reported to the insurer or the driver was uninsured. The most common example is drivers who only have third party insurance but have had an accident that was their fault (usually not involving anyone else).

For me personally, no, as I would rather spend a bit more and know I had a car which is still exactly the same as it came out the factory (ie. never repaired).
I wouldn't blame someone with a bit of mechanical/repair skills to buy back a cat D though as they could potentially repair it for next to no cost and make a fortune selling it on!

Depends what it's for. Not sure I would have a daily driver just because I would be spending too much to want to discover something nasty about it.
Track stuff or that type of thing, yeah, no issue. It can be nothing, it can mean you get a good price and it can mean you actually come out better off. I was looking at them when I bought the Puma and the only reason I didn't is that there was actually so much demand for damaged cars, a local MOT failure off a girl who didn't know what to do about worked out less money.

if it was for a cheapo runnaround that would be driven till it fell appart then id go for it, but if it was somthing special that i planned to spend money on then id go for an non accident damaged car

and dont forget car can be repaired and not written off or written off and repaired.

Still got my car and that was classed as a cat c but now its ok as i repaired it..i would buy a cat c as i know its going to be hard work but its repairable

There was a Cat D 350Z I was interested in a while back. It was water damage that caused it to be a D which worried me because of a) corrosion from the inside out and b) the complex electronics could start to deteriorate.

I got a polo, it had all the windows smashed, therefore written off. Replaced all windows, got a wee Vosa check. Cheap easy car.

i bought a few cat d cars, i think they are ok if your buying a car to keep and not really to make money and sell on!
my cad d vx220 is best car i every bought!

had a few c & d's aslong as there repaired well you dont even know they'v been written off plus some cars are written off for trivial things nowadays, also the sterio typical view of a car thats been in any kind of crash crabbing down the road is rubbish so dont worry it

my first corsa was a cat C/D write off, someone reversed into a post into it and bent all the boot floor. It all got pulled out and fixed properly. I dont mind buying them aslong as you know all the problems. The main problem with write-off's is the resale value, as lots of people wont buy them you find you cant sell it or have to sell it cheap when its perfectly fine.

My Black Sport and Red Corsa where both write offs, I purchased both cars cheap and both where only projects anyway and I wasn't too bothered.
But like people have said it depends what I would want the car for, and I would be happy to buy another write off as a project

the nurburgendy astra is a Cat C iirc, MOTs have been not an issue apart from trivial issues like taking it to get tested on semi slicks  and bulbs going out. Not only is she my daily drive but I've taken her to Nurburgring three times.
What you have to keep in mind is that the sillyest of things can write off a car, for example on the Astra I think it was part of the alarm was ripped out and the seats had been damaged. Quick visit to Vauxhall and the scrap yard sorted that out, VIC tested, mot, BOSH!

When i was looking for a cheap run around for the Mrs you could get a 2.0 mondeo met pait 70k with a crack in the bumper for £100....
The only reason i did not go for it is i had no way of getting it from the yard to mine then to the V.O.S.A. place Legally 
Some bargins to be had!

my cars a cat c but it happened when i had it it dosent really bother me as i no ive had the worked done and it running fine long as it all been done corrrect i cant see a problem with it
but with history i would want a bit going back a couple years and few recipts

if its cheap enough overall including repairing it and you could sell it at a profit or break even after a few months then yes, but im in the trade so quite easy for me

My brother has a Cat D 06 plate clio.
The damage was documented with pictures as was the repair work. i could see it had been done propperly and therefore was a bargain so it was purchased.
After this i'd deffo consider one
