****Had the timing chain changed and that has solved the problem****
My Corsa C 1.2 (03 pre-facelift model) has made a rattling noise from the top of the engine since I bought it a few months back (I thought it was normal ). It's done 38k and has just had an oil change, with no difference.
Ive taken it to quite a few garages, some say its fine and doesnt need changing, others say it needs donig and I've had quotes from £200-500 for the work.
Just wondering what peoples thougths are on this, and if anyone has any experience with this problem. I know its hard to diagnose without hearing it, but just need general advice on these as I dont know what to do
Thanks Guys
EDIT: How urgently does it need changing if it does?
The general comment I get is "is that a diesel?"

Errr... the garages are trying to make money out of you.
Chains dont need doing for at least 80k.

If they are rattly Richie it generally means they have stretched or there is something wrong. In which case I would never leave it to 80k miles.

*UPDATE*
Just been told its the injectors opening and snapping shut under pressure when it idles. The chain rattle is not present when the engine is revved.
Checked with vaux and mine wasn't recalled

ok, yes the chains rattle like sash and yes you fit a new chain to fix it (even if it hasn't been recalled by vauxhall) corsa c chains are made from chocolate i think! as for the injector theory, the rattles because its stretched and when you rev it it takes up the free play. quick test to try, let the engine get warm then lift the bonnet and turn off the engine try to listen to c if it seems louder as it stops? if it does its the chain pal. a new chain kit costs me about 20 quid n if you no how to do them there easy. it does need doing tho mate cos itl cause £££ damage WHEN it breaks.

All engines that had faulty chains were recalled (and all owners should have had letters regarding it due to the severity) .... the tapping doesnt come from the chain.
All garages use it as the most expensive way and quickest way out... and then try and charge more at the end. I've seen it too many times.

Thanks Richie, thought this may be the case as some garages have said they will do it for me if I really want, but it won't make any difference. Others say it will fix it.
Definately wasn't re-called, my local vauxhall dealership checked against the reg plate

like i said mate just because it didnt get recalled doesnt mean it isnt the chain cuasing the noise. id say theres a 95% chance that its the chain, the other cause we get is the twinport manifold which yours wont have

Would you still say it was the chain after that statement?

My 12v is noisy as fuck as sounds like it's a diesel.
At the last service, the mechanic took the top cover off to check the chain and he said it was fine

its the tensioner that cant adjust to the amount of wear to the chain, fixing a new chain fixes the problem due to it being unworn ie tighter but is not the actual problem
Field Remedy: 1818
Subject: Family-0-Engines (MY98-2004) - Rattling Noise from Timing Chain
Models: Engines: Option:
Agila 2000...2003,Corsa-B 1997...2003,Corsa-C 2001...2003 Z10XE| Z12XE,X10XE| X12XE,Z10XE| Z12XE
Complaint: In isolated cases a rattling noise after higher mileage (40.000-50.000 km) can be noticed when engine is warm. Additionally a noise can be detected when warm engine is shut off.
Cause: Limited working stroke of timing chain tensioner if timing chain elongation is exceeded
Production: An improved timing chain tensioner (extended working stroke) was introduced as of MY 04.
Remedy:
In case of customer complaint replace timing chain tensioner by improved tensioner (part/ cat-No 55352909/ 5636457).
FunctionalGroup: J - Engine
Complaint Group: 14 - Noises or Vibrations

My mate had this problem with his 1.2 16v corsa B (same engine)
Garages thought it was the tappets, turned out to be the timing chain, the garage said they just tightened it up, cost my mate £50.

warren.g - say that was the problem on my car which is a 2000-W Corsa B, and the recall worked hadn't been done, would it still be applicable?

there is no recall on corsa b's
only on corsa c's 2004-2006
but if the engines noisy on tick over, sounds more like a trackor and when you switch off you get a loud rattle you should get a new tensioner
But i had a 1.0 X reg the other day, had the symptons of the above, but i replace the timing chain kit which solves the problem due too it being a unworn chain, and didnt replace the tensioner because that involves tacking the whole side casing off
if you neglect to get this done, and it gets worse the timing can jump!
if you are willing to travel down, i can do it for you
