hey ... why is it that when you're down someone else just has to stick the boot in?
I'm in a bad enough situation at the moment with my timing belt snapping last week - http://www.corsasport.co.uk/board/viewthread.php?tid=200561
Now I get into work yesterday and they tell me they have some bad news. When I was working as a student there in the summer I made the total of what a student is allowed to earn, instead of telling me this my work didn't start taxing me. The inland revenue have frozen my pay from work until I pay back the £897.56 I owe them!
... I'm now in some deep shit financially

I'm already £2k over it but get taxed quite bad

When I decided to graduate and not go back to uni I filled in a P38 ... it's just that as a student (no tax) I earnt more than I was legally allowed to. It isn't my fault as the company I work for should have said something but It's me that has to bend over, drop my pants and get shafted by the inland revenue

Ring them up and explain the situation. Tell them that if they freeze ALL of your wage then you will end up homless!! They can be quite understanding at times. I deal with them every day on behalf of clients and always come to some agreement regarding repaying any tax. If you dont have any joy with the person you first speak to then ask your a line manager and so on.

yeah well most students with a summer job don't reach the £4740 mark ... when I reached that amount no one said anything and I still worked tax free ...

Your own dumbness then IMO, if you think you can make £550 a week and not pay tax on it then your having a laugh!

Know how u feel pop, well kinda, im expecting 300 odd quids worth of tax to be given to the inland revenue because my earnings have gone over the limit for being a student. Am quite willing to pay tax, as long as its taken each month and not when ive spent it

yeah I'd have had no problem paying the tax at the time either. I don't have a spare £897 just lying around though for a rainy day so I'm in it deep. Planning on using next months rent for some of it and my wages from this Tursday coming will be used too

Because you should know theres a min tax bracket! I was sure you paid tax on any wage unless your actually saleried at under the 4740!
