my car idles all over the place, ECU lite in on and off like a popstars relationship, sometimes it ticks over at bout 1800rpm other times its at bout 400, and if I coast the car usually cuts itself out, is this a typical idle control valve problem? where is it located on my c16xe?

sounds exactly like problem i had on mine, apart from the ECU light coming on. It was the idle control valve on mine, had it cleaned and it works fine now!

yet its annoying me now I dunno whether to try fitting some replacement parts on it or not, my mate has the same engine spare and if I can try bits n then see if it solves anything- car does not have egr as its an earlier engine thanks bud- how do I gain access to idle control valve then?

The ICV is located on the side of the throttle body, its a pain to get to with the standard inlet manifold. It has 2 torx head bolts holding it on.

if your lECU light is coing on. buy one of the test kits from halfords and see what the fault code is. they work well and are cheaper than taking it to a dealer

The halfords things are useless, just flash out the codes on the dash.

The halfords thing flashes an led which you have to count, it also costs about £15. For free you can make the ecu warning light on the dash flash and then count them to achieve the same thing!

Its the paperclip method everyone always goes on about on here......

Bridge pin a and b on the diagnostic port and count the flashes on the dash. Look on topbuzz for a guide.
