Poll: My project
Build it completely from a monster (but battered) rally shell with cage and wide arch already fitted.
Buy the Diesel, throw a 2 litre in and say laffin.

A friends mums friend is selling her one owner 95/N 1.5D for a song and it got me thinking. Shall I change the path of my project slightly and use that as the doner, or keep the rally shell and build that.

The project at the moment is a huge job, the scale of which I didn't envisage when I took it on!

Ur never gonna make it handle on rails.

I'd say make ur lfe a lot easier, sell the other shell, buy this one and start building it.

You'll be like Stu then

All I want is a car thats fairly quick (hence the standard 2 litre - 150 brake), handles alright (hence a cage, coilovers and big brakes) and looks alright (hence some lightweight wheels and a debadge )

I bought a shell to go crazy on all of the above but its taking more time than I anticipated. Bummer.

That sounds good so far m8, will be quicker that you think when you strip it out. Try and keep it standard lookin as much as possible.

I don't like 'standard looking'. I prefer the word 'purposeful'

Yeah, wouldn't quite go at it with a hacksaw, maybe take it all out properly, spray it to match the car, and just have a few gauges, tachometre, oil pressure etc, oh, and a speedo, acctually attached to the inside bodywork of the car

Why not put the diesel on the road now but not do too much to the shell just work on the engine atm. And at the same time continue slowly preparing the rally shell then when its finished swap the engine across?

Diesel all the way, if only because you'll be able to use it now!

And as Ainsley says, keep the other shell and work on it when possible or when you can be arsed.

Get the diesel and put in a 1.6 with throttle bodies, 2 litre isnt very original these days.
